Lavomatik Session - Alela Diane - To Be Still + Dry Grass & Shadows

Après bientôt 30 Lavomatik Sessions, je reste toujours surpris de voir comment à chaque fois cela fini différemment. Kim et ses lunettes vertes avec l'énigmatique asiatique, Spleen improvisant un véritable clip, Emanuel de I'm From Barcelona qui finit dans la machine, l'ambulance de Chad Vangaalen, la valse improvisée avec Vandaveer,... Autant de fantastiques moments que je n'aurais jamais pu espérer quelques secondes plus tôt.
Cette fois nous avions l'honneur de recevoir Alela Diane, talentueuse et très renommée chanteuse folk de Nevada City. Pourtant sa voix et son allure avaient quelquechose de tellement extraordinaire que je me suis soudain mis à douter du bien fondé de l'emmener chanter dans une laverie self service en plein milieu de la journée.
La pression monte d'autant plus lorsque nous la rencontrons devant son hôtel et que nous apprenons qu'elle a elle même demandé au label Fargo cette session. Elle avait aimé celle que nous avions faite avec sa choriste et amie d'enfance Mariée Sioux au début de l'été 2008 dans la belle laverie jaune-orangée, et souhaitait donc participer elle aussi au concept.
Nous avions prévu d'enregistrer dans cette même laverie, pour que les deux amies d'enfance se retrouve quelque part connectées même chacune dans un quartier différent de planète. Malheureusement ce jour là, elle est en travaux et impossible d'enregistrer.
On se rabat sur une autre laverie de Montmartre, plus moderne et nettement moins folk.
Il était une heure de l'apèrs-midi. Le soleil venait juste d'apparaître après une averse. La laverie était bondée. Il y avait une place à côté de deux personnes qui attendaient leur linge. Et c'était cela qui allait faire que cette session serait particulière.
Alela s'est assise là, et soudain les images ont pris une apparence surnaturelle. Elle était un fantôme que personne ne voyait et chantait pour les âmes une douce mélodie cyclique.

Les deux chansons sont tirées du nouvel album TO BE STILL à paraître le 17 Février 2009.

This time we had the honour to receive Alela Diane from Nevada City at the Laundromat, but somehow I was afraid for the first time that the place wouldn't be beautiful enough for a princess. Alela Diane is one of the most talented and famous folk singer of the 21st century. She sings with a voice which seems to come from the mists of time. The old man standing in a corner of the laundromat told us that he has heard a lot of singer in its life, but SHE was just something else.
Pressure increased when we met Alela at her hotel in Montmartre and she told us she asked Fargo for the session because she liked the one we made with Mariée Sioux, her chorist and friend from childhood.
We wanted to record at the same place we recorded with Mariée Sioux so the two friends from Nevada City would stay somehow connected at the other side of the planet. Unfortunately, the place was under construction and we had to move to another laundromat.
It was 1PM and the place was packed. The sun just appeared from the clouds few minutes before. There was an empty seat next to two people waiting for their linen. And that was the way it would end up differently this time... Alela sat there, and suddenly the images took an incredible supernatural feeling. Alela was a ghost that nobody could see, and she was playing for the souls an haunting melody.

Both songs will be on the upcoming album, TO BE STILL, out on February 17, 2009.
